DAY 2 and we learned that everything is made in China:

We tend to get a bit excited at festivals in our home town and sometimes have maybe one beer too much, but just one. So after we survived the first night and didn’t manage to crawl onto the bus to Bratislava for the Friday night concerts, we stayed in Vienna for Day 2 of the Waves Vienna Music Festival. The first band this night we really wanted to see was Everything is made in China. They played at Elysium, so we took the path to the catacombs again. This day it was totally different, the light engineer managed to make this place look as we haven’t been here the day before  (in a good way). The light show and visuals were stunning and the music was too. These guys really know how to combine the audio and visual part of a live performance. IMG_1983

The Day2 was the day of the funny band names and our next gig to watch was Your Gay Thoughts. They also relied on massive visuals, even crazier than the russians from Everything is made in China had. The hip-hopish electronica did it’s job and we were nodding along.

I totally liked that they both have a live drummer even though they were doing electronic music. Then we wanted to leave but somehow this Austrian Band called A tale of golden keys caught our attention in the other room. They were supergood musicians and played very nice pop tunes to hum along. Somehow the sound engineers were not the most skilled ones (again) and turned their sound mostly into shit. But anyway, I liked them and I will try to watch them again, hopefully with another sound guy.

And then, the almost headliner of the festival, if you can say so about a Dj-Set. Mount Kimbie was on the decks. I would say I was mildly disappointed.

It is stuck in my head since I heard the first DJ-Set of a Band member that they were shit, but for Mount Kimbie I had high hopes. Let’s say it was not too bad. Bad if people would have paid to see just this gig, uuhhlala. I was expecting way more UK Bass music, some kinky mixes and funny stuff. In the end it was too much boring housy and techno stuff in the mix. Leave that to to german experts I would say.

DAY 3 in intergalactic love:

The Red Bull Music Academy took over Porgy & Bess and infused some serious bass music into these time honored halls. We managed to miss Pional, but were right on time for Koreless. Another audio-visual masterpiece.

Some soulful electronica from the Glasgow Wunderkind. A new generation of producers which style I really love.

The second highlight of the third day was the Belgian band Intergalactic Lovers playing Brut. The singer Lara Chedraoui got a voice in a million and some fresh dance skills.

We were just mesmerized by her sound. Plus the drummer was the best one I have seen at the whole festival. If you have a supertight rhythm section and such a voice nothing can go wrong :)

Again, more pics from Day2 and Day3
